9824's sire and dam are both listed in the Top 200 active sires and dams in the breed for multiple trait excellence. Both 9824's sire and dam are sired by Feltons 517 who is #16 in the breed for multiple excellence, and is also the sire of three of the top ten bulls in the breed for multiple trait excellence. 9824 combines with Feltons 517 two of our best cows ever, 9401 and PR05. PR05 is near the top of the breed in multiple trait excellence with high accuracy EPDs of BW+4.4 WW+46 YW+69 SC+1.1 M+40 M&G+59. Two of her calves, 9324 and Everything, are also listed in the Top 200 active sires for multiple trait excellence. 9401 is considered by most people to be the best cow in the breed, and her success in the showring, in the auction ring and in the semen sales of her sons is unmatched by any cow in the history of the breed. This bull concentrates multiple trait excellence and phenotypical excellence to a degree that has never been done before. He is in the Top 5% of the breed for every trait except birthweight, and we feel when the data comes in he will be in the top half of the breed for birth weight.
9824 is an ET calf with a birth weight of 77 lbs., and we feel he has fallen on the light side of the birthweight range for this mating. That is why we used 9824 on outcross heifers in 1999. Eventually we will also use him on females linebred to Feltons 517. Like most Decathlete sons, he is extremely long-bodied and thick-topped. We have collected semen on him, and he has settled heifers already.
One half interest in 9824 was purchased by
Acme Cattle Co. of Tenino, Wa. in the Nuggett National Sale at Reno,
Dec.
4, 1999, for $3500. He placed second in a tough class at
Reno.
Marty Hansen bought three straws of his semen in the semen auction at
Reno
for $110. We had our first order for his semen on the Monday
after
Reno.
